It’s a question that comes up a lot. Deciding to leave a role is rarely simple — sometimes opportunities appear when you’re not even looking, and when you are, nothing seems quite right. The timing never feels perfect. And honestly, it probably never will.

“I’m not actively looking…”

We all say it and we usually mean it. But some of the best career moves don’t start with a job search. They start with a casual conversation, a message from someone you trust, or a moment where you start to wonder what else might be out there.

Being open doesn’t mean you’re unhappy. It just means you’re thinking ahead,  about where you want to be, and whether your current role is helping you get there.

Why it’s easier to move when things are still going well

When you’re still engaged in your current role — still learning, still contributing — you’re in a good place to be selective. You’re not rushing or reacting. You’ve got the headspace to really consider what would be a better fit, not just a different one.

You also come across with more confidence because you’re not trying to escape something. You’re exploring. And that always lands better in a conversation.

Don’t wait until you’re stuck

It’s easy to hang on, hoping things will improve – that the culture might shift, that the role might grow, that the opportunities you were promised will eventually show up. But most of the time, if you’re already feeling off, that feeling doesn’t go away.

If you’re asking yourself whether it’s time for something new, that’s probably your answer. You don’t have to move straight away. But starting to look around gives you options and options give you peace of mind.

Planning ahead: a January 2026 start begins this summer

If you’re thinking about a fresh start in early 2026, it’s worth starting conversations in the summer. The best roles often come up through networks, early chats, or being on someone’s radar before they even post the job.

Getting ahead means you’re not scrambling at the end of the year – you’re already lined up for the right thing.

If you’re thinking about what might be next, even loosely, we’re always up for a chat.
